During the development of Saints Row, I worked on both mission and open-world layouts. Mission layouts were generally more linear and scripted, with the layout needing to support both narrative and key mission moments. In contrast, open world POIs were designed for multiple purposes, ranging from exploration and random encounters to mission driven gameplay.
This reel is from the first mission of the game. The goal was to design a layout set in an abandoned, Western themed park. The overall theme was to capture classic Western vibes with a modern twist.
Another mission layout I worked on took place in a museum. Our goal was to create over-the-top gameplay centered around a dinosaur theme. There were several design challenges with this layout:
- How to use different types of covers for action-packed sequences.
- Designing a layout that worked not only for patrolling enemies, but also allowed enemies on dirt bikes to move freely and engage the player.
- Giving the player multiple routes and options during encounters.
Here’s a reel of the museum layout, showing before and after versions:
One of the open-world POIs I designed that served both open world and mission gameplay was called “La Playa.” The goal for this resort was to create something grounded, yet still memorable for both open world exploration and mission encounters.
